Program Description
Three Sisters legends are present in many cultures throughout history. Sisters who help each other stay fed, hydrated and strong on their journeys. North American indigenous legends speak of sisters that should be celebrated together. Greek mythology places three sisters safely in the sky as the three bright stars of Orion’s belt.
“We understand that our female Veterans experience trauma differently and are twice as likely to experience PTSD than their male counter partners. This can be associated with sexual assaults, sexual harassments, and combat trauma. Our team feels fortunate to partner with Can Praxis to begin the healing journey for the woman that stood on guard for us.” noted David Howard; Founder of the Canadian Legacy Project.
The Can Praxis Three Sisters Camp will be facilitated by a complete female team featuring a leading trauma informed psychologist, experienced in working with the Veteran community and an experienced Horsewoman who is a Veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces. The Can Praxis Three Sisters Camp has been is designed as a safe peer supported environment where women Veterans can feel grounded through experiential learning leading to self-discovery and a renewal of hope.
Participants will interact with horses as our experience has shown equine therapy, based on neuroscience, has proven helpful in understanding how an OSI affects individuals mentally, physically and emotionally which is essential in learning how to move forward in overcoming the OSI.
“This a unique program dedicated to our female Veterans. The foundation of the program is the interactions with horses but participants will also participate in other proven PTSD therapeutic exercises and have the opportunity to work as a group to increase their learning. Our goal is that this group can continue their healing journey together well after this camp is done. “ noted Steve Critchley; Founder of Can Praxis.

Participants will start their days with yoga and mindfulness then continue with exercises, some including interactions with horses, to gain an understanding of emotional regulation and additional methods of overcoming an OSI. The days will end with fireside reflection, all in support of personal renewal within a supportive community of peers.
Foundational to the Three Sisters Camp is the interactions with horses. Equine therapy, based on neuroscience, has proven helpful in understanding how an OSI affects individuals mentally, physically and emotionally which is essential in learning how to move forward in overcoming the OSI. Within the supportive peer group, participants will gain additional knowledge of personal journeys and the successes of others. Women supporting women, not unlike the equine world where a ‘lead mare’ typically provides the leadership the other horses depend on.
