Horses respond to what is happening in the moment. Changes in posture, energy, movement, and intention can affect how a horse reacts, making patterns of communication and behaviour easier to recognize.
With guidance from registered psychologists and trained facilitators, that immediate feedback becomes an opportunity to practise trust, awareness, emotional regulation, and clearer communication.
The horse makes the moment visible. The work helps participants understand what to do with it.
Horses are prey animals that rely heavily on non-verbal communication. They notice tension, confidence, hesitation, and changes in behaviour without knowing a participant’s history or diagnosis.
Their response gives participants direct feedback they can see and work through in the moment. It can reveal a gap between what someone intends to communicate and what others may actually experience.
Can Praxis does not place participants near horses and expect change to happen on its own. Every activity has a purpose and is supported by registered psychologists, trained facilitators, and team members who understand trauma and the realities of service.
Together, they help participants reflect on what happened, understand their responses, and connect the experience to relationships and daily life
By itself, equine-assisted therapy is not a replacement for medical care, counselling, or other forms of treatment. Our programs are designed to work alongside existing support by giving participants a structured environment in which to apply what they are learning.
For Canadian Armed Forces members, veterans, first responders, and families who understand the issues but still struggle to change what happens at home, that practical application can be an important part of moving forward.
Can Praxis measures success by what changes after participants leave: stronger communication, reduced conflict, greater confidence, and families better able to move forward together. More than 1,000 participants and family members have taken part in Can Praxis programs, with a 93% reported success rate after 40 months.
Whether you’re looking for support, exploring the program for someone you care about, or wanting to help make this work possible, we’re here to help you understand the next step.
